【摘要】China's land reform initiated since the late 1940s aimed to equitably redistribute land to peasants. Leveraging the gradual rollout and the varying intensity of the reform, we empirically examine the impact of wealth redistribution on fertility in rural China. Our county-level analysis reveals that, the reform led to a 4.5% increase in the annual number of new births on average, with a stronger impact observed in counties with a higher intensity of the reform. We further conduct the individual-level analysis to shed light on the mechanism driving the observed increase in fertility following wealth redistribution. The results reveal that the rise in fertility rate after the land reform was not limited to poor peasants; it also extended to middle peasants whose wealth remained relatively stable. This finding suggests that the fertility effect of wealth redistribution is not purely driven by changes in individual wealth but also by the perceived inequality level within the community.
