Abstract:
The Chinese government initiated drastic urban labor market reforms since the mid-1990s which lead to mass layoffs (xia gang). This paper investigates the long-term impact of involuntary job loss on health of older cohort in urban China. We use data from the 2011 wave and the 2014 Life History wave of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which allow us to obtain various health measures and a person’s retrospective work history. We use involuntary job loss due to business closures and plant restructuring and employ propensity score matching estimation to address the endogeneity issues. Our results show that in the long run, compared to those never been displaced, individuals who ever experienced job displacement are more likely to report worse health status, have more IADL limitations, blood pressure reading with hypertension and lower BMI. Consistently, ever displaced individuals have lower mental health scores and worse cognitive functioning. We also find that male and older people suffer more from job displacement. Channels of health care utilization and health behaviours such as drinking and smoking, can the explain the detrimental effects. The paper contributes new findings in the literature on the long-term health consequences of job displacement on health in developing countries.
