    孙文凯，中国人民大学国家发展与战略研究院研究员、经济学院教授。主要研究方向为劳动经济学和发展经济学，在Health Economics、China Economic Review、Journal of Development Studies、《经济研究》、《世界经济》、《经济学（季刊）》、《金融研究》、《统计研究》等国内外学术刊物上发表了数十篇学术论文，出版著作《人口管理中的政府政策抉择》、《中国劳动力流动问题研究》、《中国农村收入流动和劳动力流动》及教材《劳动经济学》。

摘要： This paper examines the effect of receiving national research funding on the quantity and quality of subsequent academic research based on the personnel data of a prestigious Chinese university from 1998 to 2015. We adopt an IV strategy derived from the variations over time regarding the restriction rules as well as the funding amount of each type of national funding and find that receiving funding can improve the quantity and quality of publications. The specific funding amount does not have a statistically significant effect on the research productivity. At most, more money only generates some lower quality papers. Combining the institutional features in China’s funding system with our empirical results, we believe that the goal-setting mechanism is the main channel to explain the obtained results.
